Herst
& Associates, Inc. performed detailed environmental characterization of
a site which accepted radiologically-impacted soil materials. The characterization
activities included a gamma survey using a sodium-iodide detector, background
diffuse radiation measurements in soil using a ratemeter / scaler, alpha/beta/gamma
measurements using a G-M pancake detector, swipe sampling and alpha scintillation
monitoring of equipment and personnel exiting the exclusion zone, and evaluation
of data including potential leaching analyses, equilibrium calculations, and
radon emissions. Herst & Associates, Inc. personnel evaluated the site data
in terms of compliance with applicable State of California, US EPA, and NRC
regulations, and developed recommendations for appropriate remedial design.
